HubPages Symphony Orchestra

I have formed a symphony orchestra with the hubbers I follow, in order to wish all readers a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

I need to start this hub with some quotes about music -

  • Music is the universal language of mankind. ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Outre-Mer
  • Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent. ~Victor Hugo
  • I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality. ~H.A. Overstreet
  • Music is what life sounds like. ~Eric Olson
  • Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn. ~Charlie Parker
  • Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. ~Berthold Auerbach
  • Men profess to be lovers of music, but for the most part they give no evidence in their opinions and lives that they have heard it. ~Henry David Thoreau
  • When words leave off, music begins. ~Heinrich Heine
  • There's music in the sighing of a reed;
    There's music in the gushing of a rill;
There's music in all things, if men had ears:
Their earth is but an echo of the spheres.
    ~Lord Byron
  • [An intellectual] is someone who can listen to the "William Tell Overture" without thinking of the Lone Ranger. ~John Chesson

For this specific hub I regard all the hubbers I follow as accomplished musicians on the instruments allotted to them. Of course participation in the orchestra is not compulsory. Musicians have the right to decline the position offered to them by me, the conductor, and they don’t have to supply any reasons. I am able to conduct an orchestra of any size. Weather the music is produced by ten musicians or a hundred, and weather the choir comprises fifty or five-hundred members, the MUSIC produced will be perfect music, entering the ears of humans to nourish and tranquilize their minds, hearts and souls.

A VERY important announcement has to be made at this point -

Trumpet fanfare: Pa-pa-ra-pa.....

Due to many responsibilities, I do not have enough time to read all the brilliant articles, poems, stories, et cetera on HubPages. Since my arrival five months ago, I’ve met only a few of thousands of hubbers. I enjoy their writings. Their knowledge and wisdom feed and nourish me - I am, in fact, addicted to some of them and constantly need to know if they are still okay.

If you notice that you are not admitted into the HubPage Symphonic Orchestra, it is merely because I haven’t met you yet. Or perhaps I’ve met you once or twice, but a shortage of time prevented me to get to know you better. Please feel free to introduce yourself. I will love reading your hubs – I am eager to learn from you, eager to understand your views and perceptions of all issues, eager to appreciate the music in your soul.

I am not going to use all the suitable instruments for symphony orchestras in this specific performance, but only the most important needed.

I also have to address an extremely sensitive issue in all orchestras

– the issue of position. (Anyone ever played second fiddle?) As you all know there are first-, second-, third-, and fourth- parts usually in harmony composed for specific instruments. It is true that the first parts is often the most difficult parts, therefore musicians playing the first parts evidently are able to play the music. But they are not necessarily the only musicians able to play it. The musician playing the third or fourth part may perhaps be more able to play it, but it is merely not his/her turn to occupy the position.

Every single position in an orchestra is as important as any other position. All musicians depend on each other – an error made by an individual will spoil the MUSIC, and making music (of high quality) is the only goal of every musician.

There is no room in an orchestra for a person who believes he is more or less important as his fellow-musician. In music all people are equal, working in harmony together in order to produce the sounds necessary for a piece of music to be recognized as a composition worthy to enjoy.

Is this not the way we should live? Living together in harmony will give us the peace and joy we all desire.

Just to be polite during this season set aside to enjoy peace, joy, and gratefulness, I’m not going to appoint musicians in positions, but only in sections.

Now let’s focus on the HubPages Symphony Orchestra, and oh, if you noticed that I’ve given you the wrong instrument/position, do not hesitate to enlighten me. I am flexible and always willing to change my mind to a BETTER perception of any matter.

The Woodwind Section

Instruments in this section are called woodwind instruments because sounds are produced when the player of the instruments blows air against a sharp edge or through a reed, causing the air within its resonator to vibrate.

The Oboe

is a double reed instrument with a unique, high, clear and penetrating, majestical and stately sound. It can describe many emotions, such as happiness, peace, nostalgia, and it can sound like a bird, a duck, a crying child, and various other creatures. Oboes are readily audible over other instruments in large ensembles. Only the loved-ones and close friends of oboists will ever know their generous and sensitive hearts, for they tend to be secretive, determined and stubborn introverts, who prefer only one to three close friends.

The oboe player in HubPages Symphony Orchestra is the one and only epigramman.

The Piccolo

is a half-size flute and the highest-pitched instrument in an orchestra. The sound it produces is an octave higher than written, making it a pertinent sound rising above all other sounds. It adds sparkle and brilliance to the overall sound of the flutes and the violins. The pure, high and penetrating sound of the piccolo can be clearly heard above the sounds of other instruments. John Philip Sousa composed his famous march, ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’ especially for the piccolo. The piccolo player usually plays the flute when the piccolo sound is not needed.

Our piccolist is Nellieanna.

The Flutes

The Western concert flutes are most suitable for the sound required in symphonies. Flutes for beginners are normally made of nickel-copper, sometimes silver plated. Flutes for professional musicians are of solid silver, gold, or platinum.

The concert flute is one of the highest-pitched instruments, but cannot play as high as the piccolo. Flute players are often aloof and lonely; they enjoy their own privacy. They may seem dreamy and forgetful, but could be quietly sociable. They are seldom aggressive and dominant.

The flutists in HubPages Symphony Orchestra are thougtforce, ladyjane1, SilverGenes, Deni Edwards, poetvix, and Lisa Luv.

The Clarinets

Clarinet means ‘little type of trumpet’. The first clarinets had a strident tone similar to that of a trumpet, being an instrument sharply insistent on being heard. Jazz players refer to it as a "licorice stick." There are different sizes and pitches of clarinets.

Clarinetists are bright, alert and sociable with several different hobbies or interests. They are leaders, and they insist, not necessarily aggressively and very often subtly, on being heard.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the clarinetists of the HubPages Orchestra – BobbiRant, lmmartin, Darlene Sabella, Petra Vlah, prasetio30, katiem2, Website Examiner, Lady Guinevere, and ValerieH.

The saxophones

Saxophones are played with a single-reed mouthpiece similar to that of the clarinet. It was invented by Adolphe Sax in 1841 as an instrument that would both be the most powerful and vocal of the woodwinds as well as the most adaptive of the brass, which would fill the vacant space between woodwind and brass. There are various sizes in alternating transposition. The most popular are the soprano-, alto-, and tenor saxophone. Saxophone players are happy, well-balanced, gregarious, and tend to be ‘absent-minded’ because their thoughts are most of the time elsewhere. “I did it my way,” is inter alia a thought you will find in the minds of most saxophonists. The saxophone is designed for the delicious freedom of improvisation.

Meet the saxophonists of the orchestra - vietnamvet68, Pearldiver, Stan Fletcher, Sa`ge, skye2day, gr82bme, jandee, kimberlyslyrics, and Sasha'sOnHubShell.

The Bassoons

The bassoon is played with a double reed. It has a distinctive tone color, a wide range, a variety of character, and a gracefulness that is quick and nimble. Bassoon players are responsive and pleasantly-gregarious with a quiet sense of humor. They tend to be practical jokers in the orchestra. They have a unique ability to see humor in most situations.

Bassoon players of the HubPages Symphony Orchestra are Paula Andrea, MA, De Greek, TheHoleStory, and drbj.

The Brass Section

The sound of a brass instrument is produced by sympathetic vibration of air in a tubular resonator in sympathy with the vibration of the player's lips. Brass instruments are "lip-vibrated instruments". To produce different pitches on a brass instrument, the player can alter his lip tension (embouchure) while chancing the harmonic series (slides or valves) presented by the instrument.

The French Horns

The French horn is the leader of the brass section. Development of the instrument began in Germany, but was eventually completed as we know it today in France. Some French horns are two horns in one, with two sets of tubing. One set of tubing gives a mellow, rich, deep tone and the other makes a higher, brighter sound. If all of the tubing were uncoiled it would be over 20 feet long. French horn players put their right hand inside the bell of the horn to adjust the tone. This is one of the more difficult instruments to master, therefore the French Horn players are normally conscientious, intense, hardworking and persistent. They have no time for nonsense and will be the first to remind fellow-musicians that making music is work and not play.

Meet the French Horn players of the HubPage Symphony Orchestra - habeediogenes, JY3502, and rose56.

The Trumpets

This is the instrument associated with war. In ancient times special trumpet calls told soldiers what to do on the battlefield. It was also an important instrument in the palaces of kings, emphasizing important announcements or the arrival of very-important-persons. Trumpets sound important and are impossible to ignore. A musician changes the sound he plays by changing the position of his lips on the mouthpiece or pushing down one or more of the valves. Trumpet players are usually energetic, and often hyperactive, aggressive, dominant and ambitious. When they do not need to prove their individuality and independence, they are easygoing.

Trumpeters are TheManWithNoPants, christopheranton, the clean life, and Wayne Brown.

The Trombones

Another name for the trombone is ‘slide-trumpet’. There is a range of trombones, but in a symphony orchestra only the tenor and perhaps, in the absence of a euphonium, a bass trombone, is essential.

The trombone is a special instrument in the sense that it can play all the notes of the chromatic scale from E to octave below middle C to B flat above middle C. It is the brass instrument that uses the glissando the most, which is a rapid series of ascending or descending notes on the musical scale. This ‘move’ gives opportunity to players to display a lot of needed (and unneeded) humor. Changing the sounds is done by sliding tubing back and forth, making the tube longer or shorter, and changing embouchure.

Trombonists are Nell Rose, DavePrice, amorea13, and neeleshkulkarni.

The Euphoniums

The euphonium derives its name from the Greek word euphonos - eu means "well" or "good" and phonos means "of sound". The euphonium is one of my personal favorites. Its rich, warm, and velvety sound - even produced by a novice - penetrates and sooth my soul deeper than other instruments. (The phenomenal ability of the (live) sounds of woodwind- and brass instruments to penetrate and sooth the soul, is a worthy theme for any kind of referent.)

Many people don’t know the difference between a euphonium and a baritone. “The bore size of the baritone is smaller than that of the euphonium, and the baritone is predominately cylindrical bore, whereas the euphonium is predominately conical bore... the two have essentially identical range and fingering. The cylindrical baritone offers the brighter sound and the conical euphonium offers the mellower sound.” ~ Wikipedia.

Euphonists are responsive people who are readily reacting or replying to people or events or stimuli. In HubPages Symphony Orchestra they are saddlerider1, Storytellersrus, and msorensson.

The Tuba

The composer Richard Wagner made the first tuba in Germany. The Prussian Army loved the big, bold sound of the tuba and made it a popular instrument in their marching bands. Then other countries started to make their own tubas.

Tubas look like euphoniums, but are much bigger. It was originally designed to be played while marching. Later the mouthpiece position was switched to the position it is now in and players could sit and play. (Whenever you see a tuba player performing in an orchestra, just look at the way he holds his tuba. Does he hold it like a father his child on his lap, or like a lover his loved-one in his arms, or... amuse yourself!) Tuba players change their mouthpieces to go with the music they are playing. A tuba player may have 40 different mouthpieces. There are 5 different sizes of tubas.

The tuba plays mostly the lower notes, which no other wind instrument can play. It provides the base, which gives depth and profoundness to a piece of music. The absence of a tuba’s sound will reduce the quality of an excellent performance, except when the piece is specifically composed without a part for the tuba. The tuba sound provides a solid platform – a foundation. When the tuba player errs, the entire orchestra easily tumbles, to be saved by a bright drummer, clarinetist or trumpet player.

Tuba players are the proverbial leaders behind the curtains. They are responsive, good-natured and comfortable in groups as well as alone with their own thoughts.

Meet the orchestra’s tuba player – tonymac04.

The Percussion section

“A percussion instrument is any object which produces a sound when hit with an implement, shaken, rubbed, scraped, or by any other action which sets the object into vibration.” ~ Wikipedia.

There is many-many-many tuned/definite pitch and untuned/indefinite pitched percussion instruments. According to anthropologists and historians, this was – or could have been – the first musical devices ever created by humans. There are inter alia -

  • Idiophones, producing sound through the vibration of their entire bodies, such as chimes, cymbals, castanets, marimbas, bells, vibraphones and xylophones.
  • Membranophones, producing sound when the membrane or head is struck, such as drums, bongos, congas, djembes, and tom-toms.
  • Chordophones, which are actually string instruments, but in the percussion section it is cimbaloms, and dulcimers and onavillus.
  • Aerophones, which is actually wind instruments such as saxophones, but in the percussion section they will be whistles and sirenes.

Percussion instruments play rhythm as well as melody and harmony. In close collaboration with the bass instruments they are the backbones or heartbeats of the orchestra.

Symphony orchestras don’t need all the percussion instruments, though a few play a pivotal role, such as the bass drum, snare drum, timpani, xylophone, symbols, glockenspiel, et cetera. Percussion players, who are most of the times pianists, are obliged to be able to play as much as possible of the percussion instruments. One player may have to produce sound on several percussion instruments during a single performance – you will see them rummage in the background, getting one after the other instrument ready to produce the next required sound.

In the spirit of humor a master of ceremony may do the following announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, let me now introduce to you the musicians and drummers of the orchestra...”

Percussion players are often hyperactive, restless, tensed, nervous, and easy irritable and annoyed. Playing percussion instruments offers to them satisfaction and fulfillment.

Percussion players in HubPages Symphony Orchestra are – Micky Dee and 50 Caliber.

AEvans arrived just in time for the performance. Being away for four months to find herself in this life without her dearest mother daily at her side, she did not practice one of the instruments she can play, therefore she will handle only the xylophone and the tambourine during this performance. Welcome back AEvans!

The strings

String instruments produce sound by means of vibrating strings. Most common in the symphony orchestra is the violin, viola, cello, double bass piano and harp. The three most common techniques are plucking, bowing and striking. Striking by the most well-known instrument, the piano, comes about via a key bord and the hammers (strikers) are thus controlled by a complex mechanical action.

The violins and violas and the cellos -

Violins usually have four strings tuned in perfect fifths. Viola and cellos are also part of the violin family. Informally the violin is called a fiddle.

Violinist are usually quite with extremely good manners. They are neither solitary nor gregarious. They make perfect teams, willing to merely contribute to a corporate sound. They don’t demand attention, and they don’t feel rejected when they are not heard or seen.

Our violinists are – RNMSN, Pamela99, Lady_E, masmasika, Michael Ray King, Music Lady, Ultimate Hubber, SilentReed, geegee77, always exploring, Healing Touch, Minnetonka Twin, angelenastanford, daydreamer13, LillyGrillzit and Loves To Read.

Our viola players are responsive and kind and like to contribute to a group endeavour – PhoenixV, leni sands, liswilliams, libby101a, pennyofheaven and dallas93444.

The Cellists tend not to like the limelight. They earn the respect of others by just being who they are - jambo87, Tatjana-Mihaela, Hummingbird5356, lorlie6, equealla, Hello,Hello and izettl.

Double Bass

is also, like the tuba, a leader’s position for the one who don’t dominate, but support in such a way that a group knows where they are, or should be, at a certain point of time.

Our double bass player is Merlin Fraser.

The piano

The quietly, intelligent and conscientious pianists may be gregarious in certain circumstances, but s/he needs a lot of time in solitary, playing the piano or practicing a favorite hobby.

The pianist of our orchestra is Lisa HW.

Vocals

The human voice is an instrument comprising the vocal folds within the larynx, the lungs, the tongue, palate, cheeks and lips. The voice can suggest anger, surprise, happiness, sadness and actually all emotions. It is freely available to all humans, except to some who were born with a defect that makes singing impossible.

The vocals in our orchestra are - vocalcoachChristopher Price and Judicastro

ABSENT

The following ‘musicians’ did not turn up for the audition. I hope they are fine and healthy, coping effectively with all challenges they are facing. Just A Voice, matt6v33, and sarmack.

Ladies, and Gentleman,

via and with and to the HubPages Symphony Orchestra I wish all readers a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Well-researched in the extreme. Beautiful, colorful, and uplifting imagery. I never knew there was so much to a public performance, but then again: It does sound impressive, doesn't it?

Website Examiner – Being professionally involved with orchestras – in the capacity of organizer and not conductor - for the past almost 20 years, most details were actually in my head. But I had to consult Wikipedia for some facts that have changed into wordless knowledge in my brain. When you do the same thing every day, you just do it, until somebody ask you to give a speech or lecture, then you realize you’ve forgotten a lot of the theory. I’ve resigned as organizer two years ago, but I’m still working at the music school.

Thanks for reading. Your comment (so quickly posted) is truly appreciated. Have a merry Christmas and may 2011 contains only prosperity for you and your loved-ones.

Thanks Martie, and same to you! I come from a family with deep roots into music, and so I am well familiar with the excitement surrounding a major orchestral performance. All best wishes.

What a very clever hub. I am so impressed with your use of the orchestra instruments and so many hubbers. Thanks for mentioning me. Very unique design, rated up!

Website Examiner – At the middle of every year I begin to think I should get a less demanding job. Then, in October, comes the orchestra’s annual prestige concert, and I listen to them with a feeling of awe – so THAT is why I’ve serve my jack off for the past year – and I get enough strength to perform my duties for another year. Awesome environment to work in! Thanks for making a second turn in my corner.

Pamela99 – It is so good to know you are impressed. I try not to follow more than 100, because I don’t even manage to read all of them. I frequently stop following hubbers who proved themselves not worthy to follow. It is only ‘fear’ that I might miss a most excellent hub that forces me to follow at least 100. Does this sound like an addiction to hubs :))) Enjoy this wonderful Christmas season and may 2011 be the best year you ever had.

vietnamvet68 + BobbiRant – Wonderful to have you both at the same time in my corner – an opportunity for me to say how much I admire you for being such a perfect example of a happy married couple. May I suggest you write a series of hubs in collaboration with the title: How to stay married for more than five/ten/whatever years? It may be the beginning of a best-seller book, you know :)) I pray that God bless you with good health and happiness for many years more. Good to know you’ve enjoyed this hub. Thank you so much for you kind comments.

Bobby, the poor scapegoat is the conductor, always haunted by all the wrong notes produced by the musicians during their last performance. You see, he is most of the time the only one who heard them. Perhaps some of the musicians heard them too, especially those who committed them, but who cares – everyone knows an orchestra is as good as its conductor. Hugs galore to you!

Yo yo yo! I'm in the band! "Percussion players are often hyperactive, restless, tensed, nervous, and easy irritable and annoyed." Hey! I resemble that remark! I don't care! I'm in Martie's band! Do I have to sit by that 50 Caliber Dude? Can I sit next to some of the hot chicks like that sa'ge, kimberlyslyrics, vocal coach, lorlie, always exploring, Healing Touch, Minnetonka Twin, - yes the twins! Let me sit between some twins! God bless you Martie!

Deni Edwards – Just imagine this was real – making music together. I regard making music with others as one of the most wonderful activities in life. A few years ago a friend (on the guitar) and I (on the flute) entertained the elders in nearby old-aged homes. I’ve enjoyed it so much. But time-time-time... never enough for work, not to talk about play. Enjoy your Christmas and have a super 2011. May God bless you in abundance!

Micky Dee – Lol! My dearest, Micky, you will not have a minute for sitting anywhere near a hot or a cold chick. You are going to be too busy making melodic noises in the percussion section. Be patient, you can buy them all chocolate during the break, and, of course, life goes on after rehearsals and performances. You might impress just the right girl with an impressive drum solo, and perhaps she’ll give you the opportunity to take her for lunch. So practice, Micky, practice. Lol!

I’ll see you in spirit on the 17th, with lots of best wishes for Christmas and the New Year, and I’ll play you some lullabies on my flute until you are up and about and ready to mount your bike again. How’s that for a deal? And of course I pray God’s blessings for you too.

Martie, an original and quite fun topic. I love percussion and the kettle drums are awesome to play, I do classical and Flamingo guitar as well as rock and country.

I'll sit with Mic' so I can augment the boom of the base drum with the hollow sound of smacking him on his head :)

God Bless you and yours and a super holiday season may you enjoy!

Ho Ho Martie, I am so pleased to be chosen to play with your orchestra of talented musicians who play their music as poets and creative writers and resonate a clear and distinctive sound as true musicians and artists.

Fantastically creative hub and time and research put in to make it such, you must have had fun writing this one:0)) You are one of a kind Martie and unique, you have a great heart and it beats to the rhythm of your soul.

Now let's all play in unison and make great music together. Merry Christmas to you and yours and stay safe and healthy and Happy New Year. Peace and hugs from one of your Euphoniums, great choice by the way:0)) he he

50 Caliber – So nice to know I hit the bull’s eye with you. I love the dramatic effects brought on by timps, and I love the classical and flamingo guitar, and once in a while I even get in the mood for rock and country. (The latter I appreciated more when I was younger). Have mercy on Micky, don’t hit him too hard with that large stick of the bass drum. Lol! Have a merry Christmas season out there, 50, and may your 2011 be filled with God’s blessings.

saddlerider1 – We are indeed artists just like musicians and painters, making music, beautiful paintings and sculptures, et cetera, with words. Yes, I had a lot of fun with this hub. Some hubbers were easy to place. Others, including you, demanded some serious thoughts. I had you all over, kept you for a while on the cello, and then finally put you on the euph. I don’t know if you know the sound – deep-velvet-warm, able to provoke nostalgia and longing for something that does not exist. Here is The Yellow Rose of Texas – just so you can hear what I mean, though I can get you a much better demonstration if you need one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNpDUucOHKE

Of course I was not able to analise everyone accurately. My extra sensorial perception is not yet fully developed :) But I did have a lot of fun, pondering over each of you. I wish you the best of Christmas you ever had, and I pray that all your dreams come true in 2011.

gr82bme – So nice to know you are part of the fun. Fortunately and unfortunately I am one of those intens personalities that get heart and soul involved in everything I do. So by now too many hubbers feels like family to me, and I am sooo worried about those four who are no longer with us. I respect them too much to contact them in order to uplift my spirit. This is one of the rules in cyberspace – everyone is free to come and go as s/he wishes. gr82bme, I wish you and your loved-ones only the happiest Christmas and most prosperous 2011.

And some may even return again.

In the meanwhile, let’s enjoy the harbor and each other. Yes, you’ve came as if you were sent. I’ve planned to send you a link, but now it is not necessary any more. Patti, I wish you all of the very best. You know God blesses all of us, but blessed are those who realize it with gratefulness. Expect me soon for a ‘cup of tea’ in your corner :))

Wow martie, what a funny, unusual, wonderful and great hub! I read it from beginning to end while my smile became wider and wider(I am glad you dont follow more than 100 hubbers)! And you are so right, giving me the flute! The flute is a perfect instrument for me and I am delighted to be part of the hubpages orchestra:) And in this eminent orchestra, who knows what we can become if we practice? In some way, we change and develop by interacting in this way! I wish you a very happy Christmas and a most prosperous 2011! Take care!

Great to see that so many people have found their own voice and can make a distinct contribution to the great HP orchestra. I am confident that under your talented baton the performance will be well received and much enjoyed by the selective audience.

What a clever idea, Martie, and I appreciate being included in the orchestra. Since my musical talent to date consists of playing the radio and uploading iTunes, I will get busy and learn the bassoon. That was bassoon, wasn't it, not buffoon?

Thanks for a really fun read and happy holiday wishes to you and yours.

Petra Vlah – This was a mere idea that turned out to be a quite enjoyable writing. My writers-mind often surprises me – I believe the writer in me has a mind of its own, totally independent and very often in control of my own mind. Well, this way of thinking keeps me sane. Ha-ha. It is so nice to have you in the orchestra. You are a master on your instrument – I love listening to your solos. I wish you only happiness and peace, Petra, for this Christmas and the entire 2011. May all your dreams come true.

drbj – you are a brilliant bassoonist - not at all like those buffoons who can play only the fool. You are one of my most favorite musicians, a master in your field, and I wish you only the best peace and joy for this season, and lots and lots of strength to achieve your goals in 2011.

What an amazing, delightful, INSIGHTFUL, brilliant, FUN, touching and MUSICAL presentation! 'Musical' is perhaps my highest praise word! It is what I look for and sense in poetry, in nature, in food, even! - because it captures a kind of melody-harmony which includes, activates, transpires and fulfills concepts like peace, cooperation, elevation, expression, freedom, eloquence and authenticity. I hear music in the canyons at the ranch, in the Milky Way when I behold it at night, and in all of nature.

I suspect that colors have their own musical sounds.

You've captured all that in this lovely tribute to music and your friends here who are lucky enough to share so much, especially the opportunity to write and read what each of us has written. I think how sad that so many online are oblivious or incapable of sharing this kind of deeper and more significant thought. It is not easy to share with any other - much less many others - this level of thought and feeling, Martie. We are all most fortunate to have you and each other with whom to share it.

I smiled all through it - and laughed at parts. I really enjoyed your choice of videos! I loved the Paul McCartney "We All Stand Together"! And when I listened to "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" - my Strawbeary and Ludwig Von Bearthoven came and joined me in singing and dancing along with it! Another bear here seemed to enjoy it too, though being a "Prisoner of Love" bear, he is rather confined so didn't join in.

Oh, to be able to play the piccolo - I'd love that! I love the sounds of piccolo and flute so much! The harp was a wish of my life, but I just play piano and my Yamaha Grand Piano keyboard, and not well enough for public hearing, even after a lifetime. My stage fright and early terror at playing in public put a crimp in my progress, I'm afraid. But it - like my poetry - has been a private joy and satisfaction, nonetheless. Currently I'm (with Ludwig Von Bearthoven's help & encouragement) playing at least some every day. Since I've been writing and making webpages, I've gotten pretty rusty. I didn't' expect that. I've usually remained about as good as I'd been, even in the case of neglect. This time, I really was rusty! I'm happy to report that I've improved, with Ludwig's help. I feel like I'm making music! He keeps my chair warm for me, then smiles so nicely and has such an appreciative attitude when I chase him off of it, he makes it less work and more fun, even when I know it has a long way to go to measure up.

I like being in the HubPage Symphony Orchestra! I feel confident in the piccolo here. Ta da!! (I sometimes use the flute sound on my Yamaha, though I mostly play it strictly like a piano). Thank you for allowing me to play in the orchestra. One of the first things I did with my freedom in 1972 was subscribe to the Louisville Symphony Orchestra and the little theater group. Those were my dreams come true. And of course I had to acquire a piano of my own!

PS - I'm still enjoying reading all the comments, too!! I read some then just had to stop and let you know how much I'm enjoying this! And the comments themselves are a wonderful piece of music! (drbj- now, now - the bassoon is a most important instrument! I heard a beauty contestant play the bassoon as her talent in an Air Force Base contest - and it was lovely & delightful, even as a solo!!)

By the way - I voted up and played all those "instruments" of praise for your outstanding composition!

By the way - I'm reminded of the movie, "Mr. Hollland's Opus" -=- if you haven't seen it - find the DVD and watch it. You will love it. It, too, is uplifting!

Micky - you mean you don't want to sit by me?????? I'm crushed! LOL Well, though -you can just go so far around all us hot chicks and if the twins are next to you, well - I can't help but understand and forgive you. sniff, sniff. The 17th?? Nellieanna – my dearest friend, I’m so glad you enjoyed this one so much, and so thrilled because you love the piccolo. It, as well as the flutes, always reminds me of little fairies playing in a forest.

I believe playing in an orchestra is one of the most fulfillment hobbies. I’ve established some time ago a Facebook page for all ex- and existent members of our youth orchestra, which is, by the way not only for the youth but for all musicians in our region. There are currently 190 friends on the page, all who were once (since 1987) members of the orchestra for one to five years. Almost all of them regard the orchestra as their best extra-curricular activity while they were in school. The rest of the ‘almost all’ was also involved in theatre and dance. The learning and practicing of art, any genre of art, is in my opinion an essential part of a child’s education. When children reach the age of 18, we can clearly see the difference between those who developed their music talents and those who have not. There is no better place than an orchestra for learning the essence of co-operation and the deeper meaning of life (and human emotions). And I’m not talking about those cadet bands where the children learn and practice music like parrots.

Nellienna, thank you so much for improving this hub with such a scintillating comment. I’m going to play Remembrance of Carl Reber Op.13 now especially for you on the piano, because you’ve thoroughly put me in the mood for it. My wish for you is a happy and peaceful Christmas, my dearest friend, and the best of health and tons of inner joy for the entire 2011 :))))

PS. – I am sure you will also enjoy my other hub about music instruments – just follow the link below ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ video.

My pleasure!

My ex was a science teacher and noticed that his students who were also into music were among the best students. I read a study which verified that students' ability to think abstractly is improved by exposure to playing music instruments. There are areas of thought for the one which are used by the other. As you so accurately point out, all the arts are useful, exhilarating and beneficial to students' overall success in studies.

Yes - you are right about artistic efforts (any kind) like "paint by numbers" or parroting sounds without feeling and understanding their process and meanings. The cooperation with others is another great bonus.

My kids were in orchestra - both played violin. Though neither of them pursued it, it was most beneficial, I have no doubt. They had an outstanding orchestra teacher and my daughter at one time thought she'd love to be a conductor - or a martial artist - LOL. She's always had such a fighting spirit too. LOL

I'll check out that link below WWYAMC. LOL. thank you for pointing it out. I guess I didn't see it first time around.

When you tap your baton on the music stand I'll be ready! 40 mouthpieces, hey? I will have them carefully arranged in front of me with annotations on the score to tell me when to use which!

I promise not to let the orchestra down - no drummer, clarinetist or trumpet player will need to rescue us!

Like my good byddy Micky Dee though I think I'll get lonely behind the curtain - can't some "hot chick" (to use Micky's immortal phrase!) join me there? LOL!

This is truly awesome, Martie, and I am in awe of the work and imagination you put into this. As Micky would say, again, I tap-danced all over the buttons (keeping strictly to time, of course)!

Thanks a million times!

Love and peace

Nellieanna – research indeed proved that the study and practicing of music improve learning skills. It is the only activity that develops the right and left hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. We had a student who overcame his dyslexia via playing saxophone in the orchestra, and many other cases similar to this. We tell our students that studying music does not mean they have to make music their profession. It is merely like mathematics – it enables them to live like educated people. “It is not what you can do for music, it is what music can do for you,” is our favorite ‘sales talk’.

I’m so thrilled to know your kids played the violin. My granddaughter (7) will start with violin in January. We decided to allow her for at least four years to move from instrument to instrument of her choice before expecting from her to choose one for serious study. She’s such a tomboy! Keeping crickets and worms as pets in her pockets!

Thanks for creating such a gregarious atmosphere, my dear friend. Take good care of yourself.

epigramman – You are too busy playing the oboe to even touch the tubular bells, and your eyes must follow me and my baton, so you can’t even look at the pretty faces around you. Lol! Thank you so much for your compliments – you are such a charmer, arousing amusement, delight, dearness, et cetera smile-provoking emotions in me. Take good care of yourself, because you are special.

tonymac04 – fortunately you will not use all 40 mouthpieces during one performance. Ha-ha-ha! Thanks for this great laugh. (I could clearly see you in my mind, changing mouthpieces all the time, loosing your place on your score... oh, my goodness, the whole orchestra tumbled down on you!)

As a matter of fact, most of the boys are in the orchestra with the hope they get some special attention from a hot chick or two. I had my hands full with them during tours. I always thought children studying music are angels.... until the first tour per train to Cape Town. And, of course, the reverend’s son was the instigator of all naughtiness.

I am glad you enjoyed this hub, Tony. Your approval always means a lot to me. Hugs from me to you and yours.

Nell Rose – So glad you enjoy playing the trombone. Yes, Micky better be careful, because you will be able to hit him real hard over the head with that instrument of yours, and probably damage the slides and tubing in the process. Ha-ha. Fortunately musicians [doing classical music] look and act extremely well-behaved in public, so you’ll have to wait until after the performance before you can tackle poor Micky. But be careful, the guys in the percussion section are breakers... of hearts.

Since then I avoid listening to it, because it intensifies my longing for him, and for everyone who are not with me, and even for people I don’t even know :)) But I will, for you, buy for the orchestra music especially composed for orchestra and bamboo flute :) In the meantime I wish you a merry-merry Christmas and a prosperous 2011.

There is something about that instrument between her legs that boggles their minds. Lol! But honestly, I could see you behind a cello :)))) Fortunately I did not put too much time in this – it is general knowledge after being the organizer/administrator of a music school including orchestras for twenty years, having the privilege to learn instruments and musicians by heart, and, of course, listening to life music all the time, or at least the sounds of their instruments. There is NOTHING that sooths and enriches one’s soul as much as listening to life performances of symphony orchestras. So we may very easily believe that we do communicate in spirit with each other (telepathy/ESP/whatever) and that we do, without even realizing it, encourage each other to polish our attributes. Now let me get myself sexy, I am expecting friends I have not seen in THIRTY years. Wow! I cannot disappoint them, can I? Lots of love from me to you.

Hi, I just "found" this delightful Hub. You really spent a lot of time putting this together. I've been reading the comments, and I see a lot of the Hubbers you mention are still with us here. That's great. I'm a musician from way back, and really enjoyed how you put this together. Regards.

mary615 – I am glad you have found this one; I should have done a similar hub for this Christmas. It was such fun. But too late now. And I am so glad you could relate. There is but only a few things as soul-enriching as playing an instrument in an orchestra. I wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Take care!

Thank you so much for including me in the Bassoon players of your Symphony Orchestra Martie. As a kid I played the trumpet, however to be totally honest with you I wasn't the least bit good at it. Actually I've never heard of a bassoon before. Too bad this hub wasn't around at that time in my life, because just maybe I just should of been playing the bassoon all along. Keep on hubbing!

What a surprise to see you in my corner, TheHoleStory! Where did you stumble upon this old hub, I wonder.

One can certainly not excel on an instrument that does not suit his personality, so maybe, you would have been famous today if you have chosen the bassoon, or any other woodwind instrument instead of a brass instruments. Sadly life is all about opportunity. I may be more of a genius than Einstein, but since I never had the opportunity to develop my outstanding talent, I am still poor average me.

Thank you for your visit and interesting comment, THS. Let me go see what's cooking in your corner :)

Wow, I'm way behind on this one. Making my way back to hubpages slowly. My cello needed some new strings, but I'll have it all tuned up soon!

Fun idea Martie

Janice, one of the most exciting and soul-enriching activities in life is MAKING music with one's co-musicians. We may as well call it, and forgive me for being blatantly honest, spiritual sex. I wish you all of the best with your violin lessons. The secret of a musician's success is 'practice'. To be able to do something properly in the right manner, you've got to do it every day. Aim for the moon. If you miss it, you'll be in any case among the stars.
