Do you know your SELF (and the angels and devils on your shoulder)

The elementary explanation

Are you one of those who allow devils and angels to argue on your shoulders? Do you allow one of them to make up your mind?

Or are you no longer in this phase, but still use the metaphor when you try to explain the difference between right and wrong to toddlers.

Are you talking to yourself, and does she talks back to you?

Or are you one of those who hear many voices in your mind, driving you crazy?

Well, guess what? There are, indeed, characters living in all of us.

Sigmund Freud identified them as ID (a set of uncoordinated instinctual trends), Ego (the organized, realistic part), and SUPER-EGO (the critical and moralizing trend). After Freud many geniuses altered and enhanced these characters (functions of the mind). But in this hub I want to simplify them all into a model easy to understand. For this will at least explain the voices in our minds in such a way that we may come to terms with the never-ending battle between our realistic and idealistic thoughts.

In this elementary model we call the 'voices' Mind/Brain, Ego, Self-Image and Self. They live in a 4-level-apartment inside our bodies. The roof is where our heads are and the ground floor is where our hearts are. (Keep in mind that all psychological systems such as Ego/Self-image/Self are running in the brain. The 'heart', as we tend to call our center of emotions, react on our thoughts. With the heart we FEEL - and often literally painful - love, sadness, grieve, hate, all emotions, like we feel heat and cold with our skins.)

All of them

Zoom in!

Let’s zoom in on the characters. (Male readers are humbly requested to transform all female characters to male characters.)

MIND

This guy receptively gulps LIFE with all its offerings - like a sponge in water, absorbing fluid. He processes all KNOWLEDGE obtained through eyes, ears, nose, mouth and skin and convert it into a substance called EDUCATION, which includes EXPERIENCE and WISDOM. He feeds this continuously to Self, the real you living on the bottom floor. Self, however, only take what she is able to consume. The rest remains in Mind where it blends with fresh offerings of Life.

Some Selfs have an anorexic or bulimic nature, which may affect Mind's receptive nature, but in this hub this phenomena is beside the point.

EGO

This guy is merely a robot with one function: To protect SELF. It has no thoughts of its own and no feelings. It does not communicate with Mind, Self, or Self-Image and can therefore not be intimidated by one of them. It develops only while a person participates actively in Life, taking changes, experiencing failures and successes. In other words, the ego’s of lazy, unproductive, inactive people are not able to develop. (Just look around and you’ll notice many 18-year-old ego’s in the bodies of people who are older than 18.)

Reacting ONLY on Self’s emotions, Ego programs itself in order to protect Self. Ego is a dangerous little creature, able to determine a person’s personality and able to force a person to behave in a certain way.

Emotion of Self (ES) force ego to determines personality mode (PM)

ES:Happy.....PM: Be-yourself

ES: Excited.....PM: Try-and-enjoy

ES: Insecure.....PM: Fake-it-till-you-make-it OR do-not-try-it

ES: Afraid.....PM: Fight-flee-or-fall

If Self is well-fed and mature, she will realise the strength of Ego. She’ll co-operate with Brain and initiate plans of action to develop Ego in such a way that it determines Personality in agreement with her self-image. While Self still depends on parents, she’ll notice that they are forcing her to achieve success and to accept failures with dignity. If she’s on her own, she’ll encourage Brain to grab the opportunities Life offers to self-motivated people via business sectors and other community services

SELF-IMAGE

Is the person Self would like to be in real life. This image can be a lady of integrity, a class-act, the perfect wife, the perfect mother, professional and successful in her career, religious or not-religious, spiritual or not spiritual, healthy, wealthy, sexy, a model of a woman, the president of her country... she can be anybody Self wants to be in real life.

Self, the builder of this Self-Image, have to keep reality in mind, inter alia her host, the Body. This body may be handicapped as a consequence of injury, illness or genetic codes. Self should build her image in agreement with her host, the Body.

If Self was not properly fed by Mind (who is, perhaps, not to blame because he was stuck in muddy circumstances), she will be immature and will create an image out of her range. By doing this, she will burden herself with obsessions, phobias and complexes.

SELF

This character is the real you, captured in a mortal body.

She is a mystery to others as well as to her own brain. Mind is constantly loosing her, looking for her, and when he finds her at last, he learns (to his surprise) that she matured for the next phase of her development.

She uses her host (Body) to display herself through deeds and appearance. But this could be a display of her partner, Self-Image. Personality, determined by Ego, is also deceitful.

Keeping in mind that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and every person has a unique interpretation of the truth, Self will never be able to prove her real identity. When she knows herself, and loves herself, and when she is really happy and contented, she will not try to prove herself. She will just be herself.

On the bottom floor of the 4-level-apartment inside her host, Self is a hardworking being, constantly building her Self-Image and constantly striving to become her Self-Image. In order to be happy and contented, she must become this image, or she must at least know she is well on her way to become this image.

If she is not happy, she instigates her ego to determine an unattractive and unappealing personality. Knowing that she behaved improperly will make her hate herself - an emotion that will force Ego to program itself negatively.

A negative ego will force Self to create the following Self-Image -

  1. A doll to be played with, trampled on, chuck away.
  2. A corpse to be buried before maggots start to feast on her.

Interesting hub, MartieC.

Martie, this is a very true and interesting hub.We are a very unique and complex creation and the only one that works with the ego. I believe that ones personality is determined from a very young age. But it's also the school and teenage years that really influence the way our children perceive themselves and grow accordingly. The greatest learning we can give another human being is LOVE. If we are nurtured in love and compassion then we can grow in confidence. Sadly many don't grow with these elements. Thus they are confused, spoilt selfish and angry people.God did not create this confusion but the enemy who speaks loudest in ones ear.

Great hub. Blessings

It is very important for us to know and accept ourselves for the person God means for us to be. I really enjoyed the pictures, Martie! and storytellersrus' comment!! Love to laugh!

Storytellersrus – Thank you ma’m for being the 1st one to comment on my 1st article in Hubs. The mere fact that you have used the word ‘orchestra’ is a sign to me – a green light. Because one of my babies is a magnificent youth wind orchestra. So you’ve got one in you? Well, it seems to me that all instruments are tuned-in.

Loves to Read – I agree with you, gene-codes (and for all we know the energy in the universe as well) determine basic personality, but oh boy, Life, people and Ego develop it in a strange way. And yes, LOVE will make it bloom. Thank you so much for your input – you have given me an idea for a hub.

Sarmac – You’re so welcome, and I’m so glad Story made you laugh – laughing keeps us young (and beautiful). I was a bit nervous about the pictures (of my mom). Perhaps to personal? But she is my roll-model in many ways. I just love to brag with her.

I really enjoyed reading this Hub. There are many selves to each of us, I think. The trick is to keep them all in some kind of balance, not to be thrown off balance by the many tugs and slaps that life delivers. And to keep them all in balance needs a really clear understanding of all the people in me!

Love and peace

Tony, thank you so much for your nice comment on this 1st article of mine. I’m still in confused-mode. Currently my Self, Image and Ego is not balanced. Hubs is a brand new world, a BIG world for a country girl like me, just splashing in a little pond called K'dorp for the past many years. Have a lot to share about various topics, but on what level/standard? So, while I’m finding my feet, I deeply appreciate your encouraging comments.

Interesting Hub. I like this thought - "This character is the real you. She is a mystery to others, captured in a mortal body." --- I Dare say though that we are just as great a mystery to ourselves as we are a mystery to others. The Quote "KNOW Thyself" is an unending process as we are in constant state of change. By your writing I see you are analyzer and amiable as strong points... nice combo.

Thanks Neil for reminding me. I should have stressed this in the article, for we are, indeed, constantly loosing and finding Self. If you don’t mind sir, I’m going to improve the article with this fact.

Martie~

What a great hub! I always wondered why I felt crazy inside like too many people were trying to be in control.

The answer is I have too many me's!

And not one of them has learned to play with others yet.

It is the truth that we war within ourselves to become better people. Kudos for a great hub.

I had heard of Freud's "characters" of the mind before, but you aptly described what they are and how they interact better than I've read before. Great hub!

I wrote a hub about Ego once and found the entire concept of Ego and Actual self very interesting. This information on how to know your self or the angels and devils on your shoulder is a very interesting concept and one I will visit again to read over. Allow myself to absorb and process. Great read thank you!

MartieCoetser profile image

MartieCoetser Hub Author 22 months ago

Katiem - There are so many different interpretations of ego, mostly to blame on the shortcomings of languages and personal comprehension. When translating from one language to another, many words lost their original meaning. After endless studies I’ve simplified this psychological system in order to understand human behavior better. To justify my interpretation, I’m going to write a short ‘play’ using these characters and I look forward to your opinion. I’ve read your hub and left you a comment. Thanks for reading and taking the time to absorb and process. Isn’t this one of Hubs great advantages – to refine our own concepts by comparing it with other’s?

This is a nicely done Hub, and I enjoyed reading. I have to say though, (and at the risk of looking absolutely crazy or arrogant or "whatever"), I've never been completely convinced that Freud always things exactly correctly.

Maybe I just don't know enough about everything Freud said/believed, but I'm under the impression he was someone who dealt only in people who were not whole, well adjusted, self-actualized (and all that). In fact, I'm under the impression he may not have known there among the human being population theractually even is such a thing. I don't think he experienced life as a completely "regular" and "OK" person, so maybe he didn't know they exist. Of course, he lived in a time before people knew what they know now about how the brain/body work together, and before so much could be viewed on brain scans.

I'm not necessarily disputing Freud's points, offered in this Hub. It's just that I think they don't necessarily apply, at least to the extent he would have suggested, to everybody.

I'm a lot more simple than Freud would suggest people are. I don't fight with myself, and I generally don't fight with anyone else. If, once in awhile, I have difficulty in a relationship, I'll go into "diplomatic mode" and hope to work it out (or at least take a time out). This is going to seem self-righteous to anyone who isn't like me, but I don't have any wish or instinct to do anything "devilish".

I know Freud wasn't completely wrong in all this (I do think he was completely incomplete" with his assertions). I just know some people feel like "all one person with different aspects to themselves" that are fairly easy to recognize and make work together without struggle. Just thoughts..

MartieCoetser profile image

MartieCoetser Hub Author 21 months ago

Lisa HW – I agree with everything you said. The id-ego-and-superego model of Freud is actually in my opinion the only theory of him that make sense, but with much room for adjustments. I seldom buy “whole packages” – For example clothes: I buy mix-and-match and very reluctantly complete ‘sets’, and most of the time I do some alterations on my own sewing machine. I guess I’m like this in all aspects of life. Got too much ideas of my own, even regarding religion. So I’m probably ‘lost’, but I’m happy and those who are not happy with me and my ideas – I wish them to find the peace and happiness they are looking for elsewhere. Thank you for reading and commenting. Knowing your principles (or should I call it ‘problems’) regarding this, I feel honored. Oh yes, I agree, our true selves have many different aspects - I am bussy to write a hub about this.

soumyasrajan Level 4 Commenter 21 months ago

I enjoyed your article very much MartieCoester. Freud's ideas made a big change in the whole thinking about self. I had once long back read his interesting book on analysis of dreams. Lot of these ideas about struggle between id and ego and super ego of Freud or your description of voices' Brain, Ego, Self-Image and Self are indeed very interesting. Understanding that this struggle goes on all the time while interacting with world does help a person to be in peace and become a calm person.

Your last comment and way you describe your personality from style of clothing you like etc. shows that you understand your self and your style quite well. Understanding so clearly does of course make one not just calm but also happy as you also see. I was though a little surprised that you feel lost. On the other hand such understanding will make you more clearer about your path. Just may be you do not see it that way.

I wrote some days back a hub about ancient Indian philosophies. In these philosophies also ideas are similar to what you describe. Only words used are Atmah (soul) and Brahmah (whole universe) instead self and its interections. But perhaps you may have already studied such concepts.

soumyasrajan – Thank you so much for leaving such an informative comment. Well, Life has a way of cutting the ground from under my feet every 9-10 years, leaving me somewhat uprooted for a couple of weeks, perhaps months. But I always recover, much wiser as before. I’m on my way to follow you and read your hubs.

Hi Martie - I wrote a long comment earlier but the computer crashed as I was finishing so all I really wanted to say was: this is a fantastic hub full of great information and insightfully and cleverly presented - thank you - I learned a lot and have voted it up. Brilliant Martie.

amorea13 – Oh, I know the awful feeling after one looses a comment due to whatever reason.... Thank you for not just forget about it, but to start over and leave me such a nice one to appreciate.

I thought this complicated structure – ego, self-image and self - may be so much easier to understand if explained in this simple way. Once we understand this, it is easy to understand our own complicated thoughts. Enjoy the practice of this!

Martie,

I have two things to say to you, my friend:

1-- Turn over that cookie and no one will get hurt!

2-- Will you PLEASE get out of my head, as I sometimes am unnerved by the similarity in our thought processes/ interests.

So glad I stumbled upon this and HAD to include FUNNY in my vote... so you got an UP and across the board, mar!

marcoujor – Lol! What cookie? ‘Funny’ is such an applicable word when we analyze the persisting battles in our mind between desires, ideas, fears, knowledge.... they could drive us nuts if we don’t know where they come from. (Thinking of your story about schizophrenia: thank heavens I’ve got a few angels on my shoulder, fighting the devils on the other shoulder fiercely. And you are one of those angels, mar. :)))))

Interesting article. We truly are quite complicated and yet unique individuals. The saddest thing for me to live with in regards to my own existence is the fact that the hatefulness of humanity planted a seed into my little (young) brain that i was subhuman and not worthy of anything in life, and doomed me to a lifetime of low self worth and low self esteem. That still lingers somewhere in the subconscious recesses of my (little) brain but is no longer the deciding factor of my current self image. In other words, i just don't give a crap about what others think about me any more.

I am so happy that i decided to re-visit your articles and read more. You have so much to offer readers with your writing.

d.william – It is so terribly sad that certain humans - since the beginning of times – regarded themselves as more human than others. As a citizen of South Africa, where Christians presented Apartheid as a so-called law of God, I can but only hang my head in shame. I have so much empathy with all people in all situations where unfair treatment is practiced on the basis of prejudice of any sort. Some people really have to work much harder than others to rebuild low self esteems that were created not only through prejudice, but also through total ignorance and gross incompetence.

“Don't give a crap about what others think about me,” is, according to my own experiences, just the right attitude to have, provided that we respect others the way we want them to respect us.

Thanks for the read and for sharing your thoughts.
